Hints for Staying Warm
Winter in Middle Tennessee can present not only cold weather but wet weather. Staying dry is essential to being comfortable and safe. Dressing in layers will
prevent overheating associated with strenuous activity. If you are perspiring while hiking, then you need to remove a layer. As the perspiration drys, you will get cold.
Avoid cotton clothing — it holds water and cools you down. Wool and synthetic fleece fibers wick away moisture and insulate some even when wet. A warm hat is also important since much heat is lost around
the head and neck.
At night, remove all damp clothing while sleeping. Never leave your boots outside of the tent. In extreme cold weather, they should be placed in your stuff
sack, either in your sleeping bag or under your bag to prevent freezing since they are always somewhat damp after being worn all day. Remember to pack your backpack with waterproof stuff sacks or heavy zip lock
bags.
